The week turns around. Northeast to southwest winds at 2–13 mph with waves of 1.7 to 2.2 ft locally, water steady at 86°F, solunar rating high at all three beaches and four species running. Rip current risk has come down from high to moderate, and all three beaches are on yellow with no purple anywhere — the first uniform flag picture in a week. Wading is a reasonable proposition again, with one caveat.
The National Weather Service has rip current risk at moderate today with surf running 2 to 3 feet. That is a real step down from the high risk of Wednesday and Thursday, but it is not an all-clear: moderate means life-threatening rip currents are possible in the surf zone.
Swim near a lifeguard, stay within your depth, and keep clear of piers, jetties and groins where currents concentrate. If you are caught in one, do not swim against it: swim parallel to shore until you are out of the pull, then come in at an angle. If you cannot break free, float and wave for help.
Risk drops to low tonight with surf easing to 1 to 2 feet, and stays low every period through Tuesday. Today is the transition day.
After two days when the answer was a flat no, wading is reasonable again today. Rips are down to moderate and surf has eased, so the usual precautions apply rather than a prohibition: stay shallow, keep a foot planted, and do not wade alone. Rips still form around pier pilings, jetties and the passes — the same structure that holds fish — so give those a wider berth than the flag alone would suggest.
The pier and a boat remain the lower-risk options. By tomorrow the rating drops to low and surf eases to 1 to 2 feet, so if you can wait a day the water gets easier again.
After a rough midweek, the Gulf settles right down. Saturday is sunny with low rip current risk, surf of 1 to 2 feet and a high around 90°F. Sunday holds low risk with surf around a foot, mostly sunny with a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Low risk runs every period from tonight through Tuesday. If you have been waiting out this week, this is the stretch to take — bearing in mind that low risk never means no risk near piers, jetties and groins.
What's Active Today
Spanish Mackerel — The dominant target along all three beaches today. Position near pier pilings, deeper troughs and the outer sandbars. These are active through the day, with the strongest response during the early morning and mid-afternoon feeding windows.
Ladyfish — Running along the shoreline and nearshore areas, mixed in with the mackerel and aggressive today. Best found around current edges and the tidal transitions where they feed most actively.
Hardtail — In the nearshore Gulf around the deeper structure. They feed steadily through the day, but concentrate effort during the high tide periods when the current moves strongest. Often mixed in with the Spanish mackerel.
Yellowtail Snapper — Active in the deeper nearshore water. Target structure and bottom features where they hold; the tidal transitions bring increased feeding, and they are more prevalent around the mid-tide periods.
Best approach today: fish the early morning and the afternoon tidal transitions — high solunar should keep things productive through most of the day — and favour the pier or a boat while rips are still at moderate.
Optimal Fishing Windows
The highs fall overnight and the lows land in the afternoon, giving a long fall through the usable day. Pensacola peaks first at 1.78 ft at 12:55 AM, then Navarre at 1.86 ft at 2:00 AM — the strongest of the three — and Destin at 0.84 ft at 3:23 AM. Lows follow at 2:28 PM at Pensacola (0.32 ft), 2:54 PM at Navarre (0.38 ft) and 3:55 PM at Destin (0.14 ft). Early morning hours and the afternoon tidal transitions consistently produce the strongest action, and with solunar rated high the stretch between them should stay workable rather than dying off completely. Pensacola Beach

Tidal channels and pier pilings concentrate the feeding fish. Waves here are the largest of the three at 2.2 ft, though down sharply from 3.5 ft yesterday. Yellow flag, no purple. Destin
No municipal pier here, so it is East Pass charters or surf fishing at Henderson Beach. Spanish mackerel and ladyfish lead with strong solunar support, and hardtail and yellowtail snapper fill out the options around the deeper nearshore structure. Light winds and the smallest seas on the coast at 1.7 ft make for comfortable fishing all day. Yesterday's purple flag is down. Yellow flag, no purple.
