The National Weather Service has a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties until 7:00 PM CDT today. Storms moving in from Alabama and Mississippi this afternoon and evening carry the potential for damaging wind gusts and hail. A watch means conditions are favourable for severe storms to develop — it is not a warning that one is imminent, but it is a reason to have a plan.
On a beach this matters more than it does inland. There is no shelter on open sand, and lightning is the first hazard to arrive — often before the rain. If you hear thunder, leave the water and get inside a building or a hard-topped vehicle immediately. A beach umbrella, a pier deck or a tree line is not shelter. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back out. Anyone on a boat or a pier should be watching the western sky and heading in early rather than late.
The advice to fish the morning is usually about the bite. Today it is also about safety. The strong high tides land between 7:19 and 8:29 AM, which is comfortably ahead of the afternoon storm window, and the fishing is genuinely better then anyway — activity tapers as the afternoon lows approach. Piers and boats are the two worst places to be caught in a lightning storm, so plan a session that ends early rather than one you have to abandon. Watch the western sky, and treat the first thunder as the signal to go, not the signal to start thinking about it.

Bonita — The primary target across all three beaches. These fish respond well to moving water and show strong feeding through the tidal transitions. Position near piers, deeper structure and nearshore Gulf water; early morning through mid-afternoon offers the best windows.
Jack Crevalle — Scattered through the area, particularly in nearshore Gulf waters and around deeper structure. Aggressive feeders that work the tidal transitions — look for them where there is current and visible baitfish activity.
Hardtail — Mixed with the bonita around piers and nearshore, with solid feeding response through the morning and early afternoon. Present all day, but concentrate effort during the strong tidal movement.
Best approach today: fish the strong morning high and be off the water before the afternoon storm window opens.
Optimal Fishing Windows
The morning highs are strong and closely spaced. Pensacola peaks first at 1.75 ft at 7:19 AM, then Navarre at 1.81 ft at 7:54 AM — the biggest of the three — and Destin at 0.83 ft at 8:29 AM. Lows follow in the evening: 6:02 PM at Pensacola (0.13 ft), 6:36 PM at Navarre (0.21 ft) and 7:41 PM at Destin (0.07 ft). Those evening lows are extremely shallow, which concentrates fish into channels and cuts — useful in principle, but they fall right around the tail of the storm watch, so weigh that before planning an evening session. The 7:19 AM high is the earliest of the three and concentrates fish near structure at the most settled part of the day — plan the early session. Destin
Bonita and hardtail are the most accessible targets, with light variable winds and minimal wave action giving excellent casting conditions. Work the beachfront during the 8:29 AM high, then shift to deeper channels and nearshore structure as levels drop. Destin's 30 percent rain chance is the lowest of the three, though the storm watch covers the whole area. Yellow flag, no purple. Verify current pier access with local facilities.
