The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect for Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa coastal counties from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM CDT today, with heat index values up to 108 degrees. This is the third consecutive day under advisory. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illness. Drink water steadily rather than waiting until you are thirsty, wear lightweight loose clothing, and keep strenuous activity to the early morning or evening. Take breaks in shade or air conditioning — a beach umbrella alone is not enough at these numbers.
Watch for heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea or confusion. Anyone showing those signs should get to a cool shaded place and drink water immediately. If someone becomes unresponsive or loses consciousness, call 911 — heat stroke is a medical emergency. Check on elderly neighbours and anyone with health conditions, and never leave children or pets in a parked car.
Three days of accumulated heat exposure matters. If you have been out in it since Thursday, you are starting today already behind on fluids — drink more than usual, not the same amount.
Rip current risk is at low across all three beaches and wading is straightforward. The trade-off is that today's tidal swings are the smallest of the fortnight — under half a foot at Navarre and Pensacola, a quarter foot at Destin. There is very little current to concentrate bait, so structure matters more than timing: work the sandbar cuts, deeper troughs and pier pilings rather than waiting on a tide push that will not really arrive. All three beaches are flying purple for dangerous marine life, so bare legs in the water are a poor idea today.

Spanish Mackerel — Position in the deeper troughs, sandbar cuts and near pier structures. Morning hours and the tidal transitions give peak activity.
King Mackerel — Present and increasingly available today. Early morning and slack tide windows are the best opportunities; focus on deeper water around pier ends and established structure.
Bluefish — Running actively mixed with other species, and frequent around beach troughs and sandbar cuts. Day-long presence with a heightened response through the tidal transitions.
Hardtail — Abundant along the piers and sandy bottom zones, mixed with mackerel through the water column. Consistent around structure and during slack water.
Ladyfish — Abundant in shallow and intermediate depths, present at all three beaches in the troughs and around sandbars. Reliable action all day.
Cigs — A secondary target around deeper structure, with better success in the early morning and slack tide periods.
Best approach today: fish before 11 AM or after 8 PM and work structure rather than waiting on the tide — there is very little push in it today.
Optimal Fishing Windows
Navarre and Pensacola both run four tidal movements today; Destin runs two. Navarre highs come at 0.88 ft (2:08 AM) and 1.26 ft (1:51 PM), with lows at 0.78 ft (5:43 AM) and 0.89 ft (7:49 PM). Pensacola highs sit at 0.82 ft (1:37 AM) and 1.14 ft (12:21 PM), with lows at 0.70 ft (4:40 AM and 5:50 PM). Destin has a single daytime high of 0.53 ft at 2:03 PM and a low of 0.28 ft at 8:58 PM. All three midday highs fall inside the advisory window, so the early morning and the post-8 PM evening are the sessions that make sense — and Navarre's 7:49 PM low and Destin's 8:58 PM low both land right around when the heat eases. Beach-by-Beach Overview
Navarre Beach
Spanish mackerel, bluefish, hardtail and ladyfish remain accessible through the morning into early afternoon, with light winds keeping conditions workable. Beach troughs, sandbar cuts and the deeper pier ends offer the most consistent action. Green plus purple — the water is easy, but stinging marine life is in it. Pensacola Beach
Spanish mackerel, bluefish, king mackerel and hardtail show excellent potential around the 12:21 PM high — the earliest midday window of the three, though still inside the advisory. Winds are the lightest on the coast at 1–10 mph, so conditions are as easy as they get. Deeper features around the pier ends concentrate feeding fish. Green plus purple. Destin
Spanish mackerel, hardtail, ladyfish and bluefish are showing peak activity, and the 2:03 PM high should trigger a strong feeding response — but it is the latest window of the three and sits in the worst of the heat. The 8:58 PM low, just after the advisory lifts, is the comfortable alternative. Light winds and calm seas throughout. Yellow plus purple, with the purple back up after two clear days.
