Good — but Fish Early or Skip It

The fishing is genuinely decent today. West-northwest winds run 4–16 mph with waves of 1.4 to 1.7 ft, water sits at 86–87°F, solunar is back to average, and every beach has a long falling tide through the morning. Five species are running. Flags: Navarre yellow with purple, Pensacola and Destin yellow only, with rip current risk at moderate across all three. The reason this is not a better day is the air: an Extreme Heat Warning covers 11 AM to 8 PM with heat index values expected to reach 115 degrees.

⚠ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — 11 AM to 8 PM CDT Today

The National Weather Service has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa coastal counties from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM CDT today, with heat index values up to 115 degrees expected. This is a step above the advisories that have run since Thursday. A warning means dangerously hot conditions are expected, not merely possible, and heat-related illness risk rises sharply.

The safest choice today is to stay out of the heat. Remain in air conditioning where you can. If you must be outside, keep it to before 11 AM or after 8 PM, wear lightweight loose clothing, drink water steadily rather than waiting until you are thirsty, and take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. A beach umbrella is not adequate shelter at these numbers, and white sand reflects heat back at you.

Watch for heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea or confusion. Anyone showing those signs should get to a cool place and drink water immediately. If someone becomes unresponsive or loses consciousness, call 911 — heat stroke is a medical emergency. Check on elderly neighbours, anyone with health conditions, and anyone working outdoors. Never leave children or pets in a parked car.

This is the sixth consecutive day of advisory-level or warning-level heat, and overnight lows have only reached the upper 70s to low 80s. There has been almost no recovery between days, so fluid deficit has been building all week. Today is the day to shorten the session or skip it.

🎣 Fishing Under an Extreme Heat Warning

Anglers are among the people most exposed on a day like this: long stationary hours, open pier decks or beaches with no shade, and reflected heat off sand and water. Every low tide today falls between 1:31 PM and 1:57 PM, squarely inside the warning window. That timing is the whole problem — the tide is good and the hours are dangerous.

The workable plan is the early morning, on the falling water from first light. Failing that, wait until the warning lifts at 8 PM. If you do fish through the middle of the day, take considerably more water than usual, take breaks somewhere with real shade or air conditioning, and do not fish alone — heat exhaustion is far easier to spot in someone else than in yourself.

🌊 Wading — Rip Risk Moderate

Rip current risk is at moderate for a second day with surf around 2 feet, meaning life-threatening rip currents are possible in the surf zone. Rips concentrate around pier pilings, jetties and the passes — the same structure that holds fish. If you are wading, stay shallow, keep a foot planted, and do not wade alone. Navarre is also flying a purple flag for dangerous marine life, so bare legs in the water are a poor idea there.

What's Active Today

Spanish Mackerel — The most reliable target along all three beaches. Position near pier pilings, deeper troughs and the outer sandbars. These fish respond to moving water and stay accessible despite moderate activity levels. Early morning and late afternoon are the windows.

Ladyfish — Running around the deeper troughs and nearshore structure. Present through the day, but concentrate effort during the tidal transitions when they feed more actively.

Hardtail — Mixed with the mackerel near pier structures and sandy bottom. Reduced feeding intensity through the midday period — which is where the heat is worst anyway. Look for them around current edges and deeper water transitions.

Cigs — Scattered through the nearshore action around deeper water and trough edges, with increased activity during the tidal transitions. More prevalent late afternoon into early evening, so the post-8 PM session may suit them.

King Mackerel — Favouring deeper water near the pier end sections and beyond the sandbars. Most likely during early morning periods and the tidal transitions.

Best approach today: fish the morning falling tide from first light, or wait for the evening once the warning lifts at 8 PM.

Optimal Fishing Windows

Every beach peaks overnight and falls through the morning, which is the one piece of good news in today's timing. Pensacola tops out first at 1.39 ft at 12:21 AM, then Navarre at 1.51 ft at 1:38 AM and Destin at 0.69 ft at 2:53 AM. The lows cluster tightly in the early afternoon: 1:31 PM at Navarre (0.52 ft), 1:38 PM at Pensacola (0.45 ft) and 1:57 PM at Destin (0.15 ft). Pensacola's fall runs over thirteen hours, the longest of the three. All that falling water through the morning is fishable before the warning window opens at 11 AM — that is the session to take. Live tide times are on the tides page.

Beach-by-Beach Overview

Navarre Beach

Spanish mackerel and ladyfish remain accessible with consistent opportunities, and winds stay manageable through the day. Concentrate on pier ends, deeper troughs and the outer sandbars. Yellow plus purple here — the only purple flag on the coast today — with rip risk at moderate. The 1:31 PM low sits inside the heat warning, so take the morning. Contact Navarre Beach Marine Park for current access information. Full Navarre Beach conditions are posted separately.

Pensacola Beach

Spanish mackerel show consistent activity around structure and moving water, with ladyfish and cigs adding support. Conditions stay workable at 1.7 ft — the biggest surf of the three — with light to moderate winds. Focus on the tidal channels and pier pilings. The overnight high gives the longest falling tide of the three beaches, so the morning here is the best window on the coast today. Yellow flag, no purple. Check with local operators along the causeway for current access details. Full Pensacola Beach conditions are posted separately.

Destin

Spanish mackerel and ladyfish are the most reliable targets, with king mackerel a possibility in the deeper sections. Southwest winds and moderate seas keep conditions workable — look around deeper structure and the tidal transitions rather than shallow beach. Rain chances are 40 percent here, the highest of the three, so afternoon storms are a real prospect on top of the heat. Yellow flag, no purple. Verify current pier access with local facilities. Full Destin conditions are posted separately.

⚠ Conditions Note

Navarre is yellow with purple; Pensacola and Destin are yellow only. Rip current risk is at moderate today and holds through Wednesday with surf around 2 feet. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect 11 AM to 8 PM with heat index values up to 115 degrees expected — a step above the five days of advisories before it. The fishing is good and the tide is workable, but every low falls inside the warning window. Fish the morning, or leave it for tomorrow.
