Two things worth knowing before you go: spinner sharks are working the beachfront, and the weather turns wet from Thursday.
Spinner sharks are being reported cruising the beachfront across all three beaches, concentrating around the deeper troughs and channels during tidal transitions. This is normal for the northern Gulf in late summer — they follow bait schools and are not looking for people. Bites are rare and almost always a case of mistaken identity in murky water.
Sensible practice applies: stay out of the water at dawn and dusk when they feed most actively, avoid swimming near visible bait schools or diving birds, do not wear shiny jewellery, and if you are fishing the surf, keep your catch out of the water rather than on a stringer at your waist.
Rip current risk is at low and wading is straightforward, though rips still form around pier pilings, jetties and the passes. Navarre and Pensacola are flying purple flags for dangerous marine life, so bare legs are a poor idea at those two. The other consequence of water this flat is visibility: at 0.6 to 0.7 ft the Gulf will be clear, and fish will see you and your terminal tackle far more easily. Lighter leader, longer casts and less movement on the sand are worth the trouble today.

Spanish Mackerel — Patrolling beach troughs and pier structures across all three beaches, and the most consistent option today. Focus on deeper water transitions and areas with visible current; early morning and late afternoon beat midday.
Bluefish — Running along beach troughs and around pier structures. Aggressive feeders present through the day, with heightened activity during the tidal transitions. Look for them mixing with the mackerel in transitional zones.
Bonita — In the nearshore Gulf farther from the beach where bait concentrations are higher. Best accessed by boat, and morning periods produce better than afternoon.
Hardtail — Alongside the bonita in nearshore Gulf water. More reachable from shore than bonita, though still better tackled with boat access. Scattered through the deeper zones around supporting structure.
Spinner Shark — Cruising the beachfront across all three locations, concentrating around deeper troughs and channels during tidal transitions. See the note above on fishing safely around them.
Redfish — Around pier structure and along beach edges, though less reliable than the mackerel and bluefish today. Focus on areas with good current flow and visible structure.
Best approach today: fish the strong morning highs and go lighter than usual — in water this clear, presentation is the difference.
Optimal Fishing Windows
The morning highs are strong and staggered across roughly an hour. Pensacola peaks first at 1.77 ft at 8:03 AM, then Navarre at 1.82 ft at 8:48 AM — the biggest of the three — and Destin at 0.83 ft at 9:16 AM. Evening lows follow at 6:28 PM at Pensacola (0.21 ft), 7:05 PM at Navarre (0.28 ft) and 8:13 PM at Destin (0.09 ft). Early morning through mid-morning is the prime window at every location, with late afternoon into early evening offering a secondary opportunity. Midday slack is reliably the slowest stretch. Destin
Spanish mackerel and bluefish are the primary targets, with spinner sharks cruising the beachfront and bonita and hardtail available farther offshore for anyone with boat access. Nearly flat seas and light winds make conditions ideal, and Destin's 9:16 AM high is the latest of the three — a more civilised start.
