Rip current risk is moderate today, meaning life-threatening rip currents are possible in the surf zone. That matters more for anglers than for swimmers: wading out to reach a trough puts you in exactly the water where rips form, and rips concentrate around pier pilings, jetties and the passes — the same structure that holds fish. If you are wading, stay shallow, keep a foot planted, and do not wade alone. Fishing from the pier, the boat or dry sand carries none of this risk. All three beaches are also flying purple for dangerous marine life, so bare legs in the water are a poor idea regardless.

Spanish Mackerel — The most dependable target along all three beaches and from the piers. Position near pier pilings, deeper troughs and the outer sandbars. Peak activity comes in the morning and around the tidal transitions.
King Mackerel — Holding farther offshore but increasing in activity. Early morning and slack water are the best windows, particularly around deeper structure. Boat access is what makes this one realistic today given the surf.
Hardtail — Running mixed with the mackerel and cigs near deeper water and pier structures. Present all day with the strongest response during slack water transitions.
Cigs — Mixed in around the deeper water zones. Consistent presence with solid feeding through the tidal shifts and near bottom features.
Redfish — A viable possibility around beach structure and the passes, though more selective today. Best chances around structure, shallow areas and favorable tidal movement.
Best approach today: fish the morning high from the pier or a boat and think twice before wading deep with rips at moderate.
Optimal Fishing Windows
The highs are staggered across nearly two hours. Pensacola peaks first at 1.89 ft at 9:12 AM, then Navarre at 1.97 ft at 10:43 AM and Destin at 0.87 ft at 11:04 AM. Evening lows run 7:13 PM at Pensacola (0.10 ft), 8:50 PM at Navarre (0.11 ft) and 9:55 PM at Destin (0.04 ft). One change worth noting: after nine straight days of negative lows, today's all sit just above the tidal datum, so the exposed sandbars and cuts you have been able to read this past week will be under water. Pier pilings and deeper features concentrate feeding fish. Yellow plus purple, with moderate rip risk around the pier structure. Destin
Spanish mackerel and hardtail are showing excellent activity levels, and the 11:04 AM high should trigger improved feeding — the latest window of the three. Southwest winds reach 16 mph here, the strongest on the coast, so expect a working chop. Yellow plus purple, and the East Pass jetties are worth a wide berth with rips at moderate.
