The National Weather Service has high rip current risk in effect from 7:00 AM CDT this morning through Thursday evening for Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa coastal counties — Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach and Destin. Surf is running 3 to 4 feet with east winds of 15 to 20 mph.
High risk means life-threatening rip currents are LIKELY in the surf zone. Not possible — likely. This is a full step above the moderate ratings this coast has seen through the summer, and it is the strongest rip current rating issued here in months.
The safest choice today is to stay out of the water. If you go in at all, swim only near a lifeguard, stay shallow, and never swim alone. Keep children out. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water faster than they can swim back.
If you are caught in a rip current: do not swim against it — you will not win, and exhaustion is what kills people. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the pull, then angle back in. If you cannot break free, float, tread water and wave and shout for help. If you see someone else caught, do not go in after them: call 911 and throw them something that floats.
This is the day the usual wading advice becomes a flat no. Wading out to reach a trough or a sandbar puts you precisely in the water the warning covers, and rip currents run hardest around pier pilings, jetties and passes — the same structure that holds fish. At high risk with 3 to 4 foot surf, footing and recovery are both against you.
Fish from the pier deck, from a boat, or from dry sand well back from the waterline. Do not fish alone. If you are on a pier and see someone caught in a current, do not go in after them — call 911 and throw them something that floats. Navarre and Pensacola are flying red flags; watch for double red, which closes the water entirely.

Spanish Mackerel — The primary target along piers and beach zones from Pensacola through Navarre to Destin. Focus where moving water concentrates bait: pier pilings, surf zone edges and deeper troughs, all reachable from the deck or with a long cast. These remain accessible despite average solunar conditions, with early morning and late afternoon the strongest feeding.
Ladyfish — Running alongside the mackerel in the same productive zones. Concentrate effort around pier ends, deeper troughs and beachfront structure where the current runs strongest. Present through the day with peak activity during the tidal transitions.
Yellowtail Snapper — Favouring structure and the deeper water transitions. Pier ends and offshore structure accessible by boat give the best results; this is the one target that genuinely rewards being on a boat today.
Best approach today: pier deck, boat or dry sand — nothing that puts you in the surf zone, and fish the early morning or late afternoon around the tidal transitions.
Optimal Fishing Windows
The lows cluster around midday and the highs fall overnight. Navarre has a 1.83 ft high at 12:26 AM and a 0.45 ft low at 12:14 PM. Pensacola records only a 0.42 ft low at 12:21 PM, with no high in this cycle. Destin peaks at 0.83 ft at 1:42 AM before a 0.16 ft low at 1:17 PM. Early morning and late evening consistently produce better than the midday slack. Bear in mind that with surf at 3 to 4 feet the swell is doing more to the water than the tide is, so structure and current edges matter more than precise tide timing today. Navarre Beach

Destin
No municipal pier here, so it is East Pass charters or surf fishing at Henderson Beach — and today that means dry sand only. Spanish mackerel and ladyfish are reliable around the deeper structure and tidal transitions, with yellowtail snapper around structure for boats. Henderson Beach is flying yellow, lighter than the regional high rating and lighter than the reds to the west, so treat the water as hazardous regardless and check the flag again on arrival.
