The National Weather Service has rip current risk at moderate today, a second consecutive day, with surf running 2 to 3 feet and east winds around 15 mph. Moderate means life-threatening rip currents are possible in the surf zone. This is the roughest water of the past fortnight, and the fine weather makes it look more benign than it is.
Swim near a lifeguard, stay within your depth, and keep clear of piers, jetties and groins where currents concentrate. If you are caught in one, do not swim against it: swim parallel to shore until you are out of the pull, then come in at an angle. If you cannot break free, float and wave for help rather than exhausting yourself. Risk is expected to ease back to low overnight.
Moderate rip current risk matters more to anglers than to swimmers. Wading out to reach a trough puts you in exactly the water where rips form, and they concentrate around pier pilings, jetties and the passes — the same structure that holds fish. With surf at 2.1 to 2.8 feet, footing is less certain than it has been at any point this fortnight, and Pensacola's 2.8 ft is the roughest of the three by some margin.
Stay shallow, keep a foot planted, and do not wade alone. Fishing from the pier, a boat or dry sand carries none of this risk, and on a high-solunar day with strong morning tides the pier is a good proposition anyway. Navarre and Pensacola are also flying purple flags for dangerous marine life.

Spanish Mackerel — The most consistent target along piers, beachfront and nearshore Gulf waters. They respond actively to tidal movement and feed through the morning and early afternoon. Position near pier pilings and along sandy structure.
Bonita — Around piers and nearshore structure, feeding aggressively during the tidal transitions and particularly in the morning. Look for them in deeper water channels and around current edges.
Ladyfish — Running strong around piers and beachfront areas, responding well to active tidal flow. Consistent feeding through the day with peaks during the morning high.
Hardtail — Mixed with the mackerel and bonita around nearshore structure, feeding actively during the tidal transitions. Present at all three locations along pier ends and deeper troughs.
Cigs — Scattered through piers and beachfront areas, most active morning through midday when tidal flow peaks. Concentrate effort during the high tide periods.
Yellowtail Snapper — In nearshore Gulf waters at all three locations, feeding most actively during the morning and midday tidal peaks. Look in the deeper channels and around structure.
Best approach today: fish the morning tidal peaks and work the pier or dry sand rather than wading, with rips at moderate and the biggest surf in a fortnight.
Optimal Fishing Windows
Morning tidal peaks deliver the strongest fishing across all three beaches. Pensacola tops out first at 1.76 ft at 8:44 AM, then Navarre at 1.84 ft at 9:49 AM — the strongest of the three — and Destin at 0.83 ft at 10:00 AM. Lows follow at 5:41 PM at Pensacola (0.47 ft), 7:17 PM at Navarre (0.52 ft) and 8:20 PM at Destin (0.17 ft). The 8:44 AM tidal peak delivers the top window, with the pier pilings holding active fish through the morning. Destin
No municipal pier here, so it is East Pass charters or surf fishing at Henderson Beach. Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and yellowtail snapper deliver solid opportunities around the beachfront structure, with bonita and snapper in the nearshore Gulf. Northeast winds and moderate seas keep conditions fishable through morning and midday, and the 10:00 AM high is the strongest window. Yellow flag, no purple.
