Destin is flying yellow and purple flags with surf at 0.8 ft and light northwest to southwest winds at 2–12 mph. Rip current risk stays at low. Water is 86°F with highs near 89°F — the coolest of the three — and only a 20 percent daytime rain chance, though that rises to 30 percent overnight. A Heat Advisory runs 11 AM to 8 PM.

🌊 Rip Current Risk — Low

The National Weather Service has rip current risk at low today with surf around a foot. Low risk does not mean no risk: life-threatening rip currents still form near piers, jetties and groins on the calmest days, so give those structures room and swim near a lifeguard. Low risk is forecast to hold right through Tuesday with surf staying around a foot — a settled stretch of water ahead.

🌡 Heat Advisory — 11 AM to 8 PM CDT

The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM CDT today. The advisory covers a wide area of southwest Alabama, northwest Florida and southeast Mississippi with heat index values of 108 to 112 degrees; the coastal zone forecasts put the beaches themselves nearer the lower end, around 106 to 107. Either way it is hot enough to matter, and it is the ninth consecutive day under advisory or warning. Drink water steadily rather than waiting until you are thirsty, wear lightweight loose clothing, and take breaks in shade or air conditioning.

Watch for heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea or confusion. Anyone showing those signs should get to a cool place and drink water immediately. If someone becomes unresponsive or loses consciousness, call 911 — heat stroke is a medical emergency. Check on elderly neighbours and anyone with health conditions, and never leave children or pets in a parked car.

🚩 Yellow Flag — Moderate Hazard

Yellow means moderate hazard: moderate surf, moderate currents, or both. Swimming is allowed but calls for caution. With surf at 0.8 ft and rip risk at low, the yellow flag is a local lifeguard call rather than anything in the regional forecast — most likely current running through East Pass, which is why Destin has read a notch above the beaches to its west for most of this month. Stay close to shore, swim near a lifeguard, and give the pass and its jetties room.

⚠ Purple Flag — Dangerous Marine Life

The purple flag is up alongside the yellow, meaning dangerous marine life has been reported in the water — on this coast in August that usually means jellyfish or Portuguese man-of-war. Purple is an additional warning, not a downgrade of the yellow flag. Man-of-war tentacles still sting after the animal washes ashore, so give anything stranded on the sand a wide berth and keep children and dogs away from it. Shuffle your feet in the shallows for rays.

☀ UV Index — Very High

The National Weather Service has today's UV index at very high. White sand reflects UV back at you, so beach exposure runs higher than the number suggests. Cover up, reapply sunscreen through the day, and take shade between 10 AM and 4 PM. With the water this calm, sunburn and heat are the realistic hazards today — not the Gulf.

Is It Safe to Swim at Destin Today?

Yes, with normal care. Surf is 0.8 ft, winds are light, rip current risk is low and the water is a warm 86°F. The yellow flag means normal caution near the pass, and the purple flag means stinging marine life is in the water — watch for jellyfish and avoid anything washed up on the sand. Destin also has the lowest rain chance and the coolest high of the three today. Sun and heat are the realistic hazards rather than the Gulf, so plan shade and fluids.

East Pass Charter Conditions

A good day to be on a boat. Sub-foot surf and winds under 12 mph make for an easy run out through East Pass and a comfortable day offshore. Bonita are the primary target with consistent action through the day, and hardtail and cigs supplement it. The practical constraint is heat rather than sea state — an open deck offshore under advisory-level heat and a very high UV index is punishing, so morning departures beat afternoon ones and shade and water matter more than usual. Half-day and full-day trips run out of Destin Harbor year-round; weekend slots fill quickly, so call ahead.

Henderson Beach Surf Fishing

With 0.8 ft surf and low rip risk, wading the trough is straightforward — though the purple flag makes bare legs a poor idea today, and the yellow flag means paying attention to current near the pass. Bonita work the Gulf-facing beach where baitfish congregate, with hardtail around the deeper cuts and sandbars and cigs mixed through. Flat, clear water means fish spook easily, so keep movement down and work the deeper cuts. Destin has no municipal pier, so the beach and the boats are the options. The 5:23 AM high gives a long morning fall to work.

Destin Tides Today

TideTimeHeight
High tide5:23 AM0.78 ft
Low tide5:28 PM0.09 ft

Destin runs a much smaller tidal range than Navarre or Pensacola, but today's swing runs a full twelve hours from the 5:23 AM high to a 0.09 ft low in the early evening — the latest low of the three, which makes for a workable evening session once the advisory lifts at 8 PM. Full tide charts are on the live tides page.

7-Day Outlook

Saturday brings scattered afternoon thunderstorms with highs near 91°F, then Sunday improves to mostly clear skies with highs around 92°F. Rip current risk stays low through Tuesday with surf around a foot and light west to southwest winds. The extended forecast shows typical late-August patterns — afternoon storm potential and warm temperatures in the low 90s through the period. The heat has eased from last week's extremes but advisories remain likely, so keep checking before you head out.
