Destin is flying a red flag today, with a Rip Current Statement in force until 7:00 PM and a Flood Watch until noon. Seas are the largest on the coast at 2.6 ft with southeast to northeast winds at 5–15 mph, water is 83°F and rain probability runs 80 percent. Three separate reasons to treat the water carefully today.

🚩 RED FLAG — High Hazard

Destin is flying a red flag today. Red means high hazard: high surf, strong currents, or both. Paired with the Rip Current Statement above and 2.6 ft seas — the largest on the coast today — the flag and the warning agree.

Most people should stay out of the water. Keep children out entirely. If you are a strong swimmer and choose to go in, stay shallow, stay near a lifeguard, and do not go alone. Do not wade out to reach a sandbar, and keep well clear of the East Pass jetties, where currents run strongest here. Watch for a double red flag — that closes the water to the public entirely.

⚠ RIP CURRENT STATEMENT — In Effect Until 7:00 PM Tonight

The National Weather Service has a Rip Current Statement in effect until 7:00 PM CDT today for this stretch of coast. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water faster than they can swim back.

Swim only near a lifeguard, and stay out entirely if no lifeguard is on duty. Keep clear of piers, jetties and groins, where rip currents run hardest.

If you are caught in a rip current: stay calm, relax and float — do not swim against the current, because exhaustion is what kills people in rips. If you can, swim along the shoreline to get out of the pull, then angle back in. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. If you see someone else caught, do not go in after them: call 911 and throw them something that floats.

🌧 FLOOD WATCH — In Effect Until Noon Today

A Flood Watch is in effect until 12:00 PM CDT today, with rain probability at 80 percent through the daylight hours. Excessive runoff may cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying, flood-prone areas, and flooding is possible in poor-drainage and urban spots where storm drains and ditches clog with debris.

For anyone travelling to the coast this morning, that is a road hazard as much as a water one: standing water on causeways and low-lying approaches is the practical risk. Monitor later forecasts and be alert for a possible upgrade to a Flood Warning. Never drive through a flooded roadway — you cannot judge the depth, and it takes very little moving water to float a vehicle.

🍂 The Season Has Turned

Gulf water is down to 83–84°F from the 86–87°F that held through most of September, and afternoon highs are now in the low 80s rather than the upper 80s. Navarre's 68°F morning continues the cooling trend that started late last month. The water is still comfortable for swimming on a settled day, but this is autumn rather than an extension of summer, and the pattern of frequent rain reflects that.

Is It Safe to Swim at Destin Today?

No — not for most people. A red flag means high hazard from high surf, strong currents, or both, and it is backed today by a Rip Current Statement in force until 7:00 PM and the largest seas on the coast at 2.6 ft. Stay out of the water. Keep children out entirely. Strong swimmers who choose to go in should stay shallow, stay near a lifeguard and never swim alone. Do not wade out to reach a sandbar, and keep well clear of the East Pass jetties, where currents run hardest here. If you had a beach day planned, this is a day for the harbour or indoors — and with 80 percent rain, the weather is not offering much either.

East Pass Charter Conditions

A red beach flag governs the swimming area rather than the harbour, and charters run their own judgement on sea state — but 2.6 ft seas, winds to 15 mph and an 80 percent rain chance make this a marginal day to be out. Talk to your operator and expect a short window or a cancellation. If conditions allow a run, Spanish mackerel and bluefish are the most reliable targets, with ladyfish and redfish near structure and king mackerel a possibility in deeper nearshore Gulf water. The 6:29 AM high favours an early departure. The rainy pattern eases by midweek, so Wednesday looks a better bet. For surf fishing at Henderson Beach, fish from dry sand today and do not wade — the red flag and the rip statement both apply to exactly the water you would be standing in. Destin has no municipal pier, so the beach and the boats are the options.

Destin Tides Today

TideTimeHeight
High tide6:29 AM0.90 ft
Low tide5:32 PM0.10 ft

Destin runs a much smaller tidal range than the western beaches — the 6:29 AM high falls to a 0.10 ft low at 5:32 PM, the latest of the three. With 2.6 ft seas, the swell is doing far more to the water than the tide is today. Full tide charts are on the live tides page.

7-Day Outlook

Rain dominates much of today, with temperatures noticeably cooler than summer and north-northeast winds holding moderate strength. The rainy pattern eases by midweek as high pressure builds, and by Wednesday clearing skies and gentler winds return. Beyond that the extended outlook shows autumn establishing itself: cooler mornings, mild afternoons and scattered shower chances early in the day. Gulf water will keep declining toward typical fall values. Because the surf zone product has not been reissued recently, check the live conditions page and the flags on the beach for the current rip current rating rather than relying on an outlook.
