A line of strong thunderstorms moved across the coast early this morning and the National Weather Service issued a Special Marine Warning through 9:00 AM CDT for wind gusts over 34 knots, covering the water from Pensacola east past Destin. That warning has expired, but scattered storms remain likely through the day with rain chances in the 75 to 85 percent range. Watch the radar before heading out and get off the pier and out of the water at the first sound of thunder.
Is It Safe to Swim at Destin Today?
No — the water is closed. Double red flags mean entry into the Gulf is prohibited, and lifeguards will clear anyone who goes in. This is the strongest response available to Okaloosa County beach safety, and it lines up with the High Rip Current Risk the National Weather Service has in effect through late tonight. At 2.6 ft, the surf here is the biggest along the three beaches, and the currents running around the East Pass jetties are stronger still. There is no version of today where getting in the water at Destin is a reasonable call.

East Pass and Henderson Beach Today
Destin has no municipal fishing pier, so the options here are the East Pass and the beach itself — and both are constrained today. Surf fishing at Henderson Beach means staying on dry sand: the double red flag closes the water, so wading out to reach a trough is not permitted. Casting from the beach is still fine, and the 2:05 PM high tide is the better window if the weather cooperates.
Charter operations out of the East Pass are a separate question from the beach flag, and boats may still be running. Conditions offshore are the real limit today rather than the flag: scattered thunderstorms are forecast through the afternoon, the pass runs hard on an outgoing tide with this much wind behind it, and a Special Marine Warning covered these waters earlier this morning. Monday clears out considerably with highs near 86°F and rain chances dropping to about 20 percent. Tuesday warms to around 88°F with roughly a 35 percent chance of afternoon storms, and Wednesday stays near 88°F with only a 15 percent chance of rain. The rest of the week holds in the mid to upper 80s with typical late-summer afternoon storm chances, and rain chances climb again heading into next weekend.
