Pensacola Beach is flying green and purple flags this morning. Surf is around a foot with east winds near 5 mph turning southeast in the afternoon, and the National Weather Service has rip current risk at low with water temperatures in the upper 80s. The green flag is a step down from yesterday's yellow — but the purple flag has now been up for eight straight days.

🚩 Green Flag — Low Hazard

Green means low hazard: calm conditions and the safest rating the beach issues. Surf around a foot, winds around 5 mph and low rip current risk make this close to an ideal beach day. Green still does not mean unsupervised — currents can develop and the flag can change during the day — so swim near a lifeguard and glance at the flags if you come back later.

🌊 Rip Current Risk — Low

The National Weather Service has rip current risk at low today for the whole Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa stretch. Low risk does not mean no risk: life-threatening rip currents still form near piers, jetties and groins even on the calmest days, so give those structures room and swim near a lifeguard.

⚠ Purple Flag — Dangerous Marine Life

The purple flag is up alongside the green, meaning dangerous marine life has been reported in the water — on this coast in August that usually means jellyfish or Portuguese man-of-war. Purple is a separate warning and does not cancel the green flag: the water itself is calm, but there is something in it worth avoiding. Man-of-war tentacles still sting after the animal washes ashore, so give anything stranded on the sand a wide berth and keep children and dogs away from it. Shuffle your feet in the shallows for rays.

Is It Safe to Swim at Pensacola Beach Today?

Yes. The green flag means low hazard, rip current risk is low and surf is around a foot — the easiest conditions of the week. The purple flag is the only real consideration: stinging marine life is in the water, and on a day this calm that is the thing most likely to spoil it. Swim near a lifeguard, keep an eye out for jellyfish, and avoid anything washed up on the sand even if it looks dead. The UV index is very high, so cover up.

Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier Today

Light east winds and a foot of surf make for an easy morning on the pier. Spanish mackerel and hardtail are working the pier ends and deeper troughs, with king mackerel holding further out in deeper water for anyone with the reach. Ladyfish and bluefish are mixed through the shallower zones. Water will be clear with surf this small, so lighter leader and a quieter presentation are worth it. Check current pier hours and rates before heading out.

Pensacola Beach Tides Today

TideTimeHeight
High tide7:16 AM1.5 ft
Low tide7:42 PM−0.1 ft

A morning high of 1.5 feet falling through the whole day to a slightly negative low of −0.1 ft in the evening — more than twelve hours of steadily moving water. These figures come from the NWS surf zone product for Pensacola Pass. Full tide charts are on the live tides page.

7-Day Outlook

Monday stays mostly sunny with highs in the upper 80s, south winds at 5–10 mph and surf around a foot. Tuesday and Wednesday hold the same pattern with surf of 1 to 2 feet and rip current risk staying low. By Thursday the risk edges up to moderate as southwest winds build and surf reaches around 2 feet.
