Species Guide β€” Summer

🐟
Spanish Mackerel
● Peak Summer β€” Most Consistent Bite
The primary target along Pensacola Beach right now β€” showing in strong numbers around the Gulf Pier pilings, deeper troughs and outer sandbars, best on tide changes. Small silver spoon or a live glass minnow on light wire leader; their teeth shred straight through mono.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🦈
King Mackerel
● Biting Strong Now
Biting strong along the beaches and around reef structure, with kings reported off Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier. Bigger and harder-fighting than Spanish β€” heavier tackle and wire leader required. Slow-troll a live hardtail, cigar minnow, or menhaden near reef structure.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🐑
Flounder
● Solid Summer Bite
Bite improving along Pensacola Bay and Little Sabine seawalls, bay structure and inshore flats. Ambush predators that bury in the sand and wait β€” fish a live finger mullet or mud minnow slow and low along the bottom and give them time to react.

πŸ¦‘
Amberjack
⚠ Verify FWC Season
Stacked so thick on the taller public reef structures off Pensacola Pass that snapper anglers often move to lower-profile bottom just to get baits past them. Eating jigs, live bait, dead bait, even topwater β€” a big popper worked over the reefs at dawn is deadly. Live hardtail or blue runner near the bottom for a heavyweight fight.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🐠
Red Snapper
⚠ Verify FWC Season
The natural bottom bite has been hot on recent trips out of Pensacola, producing mixed boxes of red snapper, red grouper, mangrove, lane and scamp. Fresh cut cigar minnow, squid, or menhaden chunks on the bottom, lighter fluorocarbon in clear, pressured water. Federal season is limited β€” always check FWC before going.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🐬
Mahi-Mahi
Good Β· Offshore Summer
Showing up well offshore, with kayak and boat anglers finding them around scattered sargassum lines and weed patches. Heavy grass has been a factor but it is also holding life. Troll a small skirted ballyhoo or a live pilchard along the weed lines.
