The Destin Fishing Rodeo is a month-long fishing tournament that has run every October since 1948. It's the oldest continuously running fishing tournament in Florida and one of the largest in the Southeast. Whether you're an angler who wants to compete or a visitor who just wants to watch the weigh-ins, this guide covers what the rodeo actually is, when things happen, and how to get involved.

What Is the Destin Fishing Rodeo?

The Destin Fishing Rodeo is a saltwater fishing tournament held annually on October 1 through October 31. It started in 1948 as a way to extend Destin's tourist season into fall — at the time it was a small local event. Today it draws tens of thousands of anglers and spectators from across the country.

Destin has billed itself as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" since the 1950s, and the Fishing Rodeo is the centerpiece of that identity. The tournament covers 29 divisions across more than 33 species of fish, with divisions for juniors, teens, ladies, seniors, and open anglers. Daily, weekly, and overall prizes are awarded, with over $100,000 in cash prizes distributed across the month.

What Happens at the Daily Weigh-Ins

Every day in October, from 10am to 7pm, fishing boats bring their catches to the official weigh station behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk. The weigh-ins are free and open to the public — you can walk up, watch the fish come off the boats, and see the standings board.

The weigh-in area fills up in the late afternoon as charter boats return from their trips. If you're in Destin in October and you do nothing else connected to the rodeo, at least spend an hour at the docks between 4pm and 7pm. It's one of the more interesting free things to happen along the Harbor Boardwalk.

How to Fish in the Rodeo as a Visitor

You don't need to go through a complicated registration process if you book a charter boat registered in the Destin Fishing Rodeo. Any angler aboard a registered charter automatically enters the tournament at no additional charge — the charter fee covers your rodeo entry. The registered charter list is available at destinfishingrodeo.org.

If you want to fish from your own boat, kayak, paddleboard, or from shore, piers, or bridges, you register separately. Individual and family memberships are available — individual membership is $35, family is $50. Registration can be done online at destinfishingrodeo.org.

October Events Connected to the Rodeo

Rocktober Concert Series

Every Saturday night in October, HarborWalk Village hosts a live concert from 7pm to 9:30pm. Fireworks over the Destin Harbor follow at 9pm. These events are free to attend — you can watch from the boardwalk, dockside restaurants, or from the water if you're on a boat.

Rootin Tootin Rodeo Roundup

Held in mid-October at the Okaloosa Island Pier, this is a kids' fishing event for ages 12 and under. Children get rods and gear and fish for local species including redfish, flounder, sheepshead, and black drum. It's free and aimed specifically at younger visitors.

Destin Fishing Rodeo 5K

The 5K Rodeo Run is held in early October. The $35 entry includes post-race refreshments and a party at AJ's following the award ceremony. Registration opens at 7am at Clement Taylor Park. Walkers are welcome.

Halloween Party and Award Ceremony

October 31 ends the tournament with a Halloween party. November 1 brings the official awards ceremony at AJ's where monthly winners across all divisions are recognized.

What to Expect in Destin During October

The Fishing Rodeo changes the character of October in Destin significantly. The Harbor Boardwalk area is active every day, particularly in the late afternoon when boats return. Hotel and rental prices are above the quiet October baseline but below summer rates. Fishing charters book up quickly for October — if you're planning to fish, book your charter as early as possible, especially for weekends.

Water temperature in October runs 75–82°F, still comfortably warm for swimming. Crowds at the beach are a fraction of summer. If you can visit during October and you have any interest in fishing culture or waterfront activity, the timing of the rodeo makes it a genuinely worthwhile month to be here.

Do You Need Tickets to Watch?

No. The daily weigh-ins, the Rocktober concerts, and the boardwalk atmosphere are all free to observe as a spectator. The only things that cost money are entering the tournament yourself (charter fees or individual registration) and some of the special events like the 5K.
