Destin has some of the clearest water on the Gulf — typical 15–25 ft visibility. Popular dive sites include the artificial reefs along the Destin Snorkel Reef just east of the jetties (boat or kayak access), and offshore wrecks like the Miss Louise and the SS Vamar. Goliath groupers, stingrays, and seasonal sea turtles are common. Snorkel tours depart daily from HarborWalk Village in summer.

Destin doesn't have a public Gulf-front fishing pier (it's the only major Emerald Coast town without one). Surf fishing is popular along Henderson Beach State Park and James Lee Park. The Okaloosa Island Pier (1,261 ft) is a 10-minute drive west on Hwy 98 — no Florida saltwater license required when fishing from the pier. Gear rentals and bait on-site.

The Destin Beach to Bay Trail runs 7+ miles, connecting HarborWalk Village to Mid-Bay Bridge. Flat, paved, and beginner-friendly, with views of Choctawhatchee Bay and Joe's Bayou. Henderson Beach State Park has shorter nature trails through coastal dunes. Bike rentals are available at HarborWalk Village and along Hwy 98.

Destin sits on the Emerald Coast migratory flyway. Over 300 species recorded seasonally. Spring migration (April–May) is peak. Henderson Beach State Park, Choctawhatchee Bay shoreline, and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park (15 min east) are prime habitat for shorebirds, herons, osprey, and seasonal warblers.

Destin and South Walton are active nesting sites May–October for loggerhead and (less commonly) green sea turtles. The South Walton Turtle Watch Group runs dawn turtle walks during peak season — check their schedule on the Walton County website. Lights-out ordinance is in effect for beachfront properties May–October to protect hatchlings.

The Henderson Beach State Park Campground offers 60 sites with electricity and water hookups, including a few full-hookup sites. Bathhouses, direct beach access, picnic areas, and 0.75 miles of Gulf-front shoreline. Reserve via ReserveAmerica.com — books up 11 months ahead for spring and summer.

A 208-acre Florida state park with 0.75 miles of Gulf-front beach, sugar-white quartz sand, dune walkovers, picnic pavilions, and short nature trails through scrub-pine and coastal dunes. The campground offers 60 sites for tents and RVs. Self-guided trails daily; small day-use fee at the gate.

The heart of Destin's harbor district. The boardwalk wraps around the marina and is lined with restaurants, bars, ice cream stands, beach shops, and live music venues. Easy to walk; no entry fee. Free fireworks shows from the harbor on summer Thursdays.

Crab Island isn't actually an island — it's a submerged sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay just north of the Destin (Marler) Bridge, with shallow turquoise water 1–4 ft deep. Boat-access only. On weekends in summer, dozens of pontoons anchor here alongside floating food and drink vendors. Rent a pontoon at HarborWalk Village or join a shuttle tour.
